Understand the steps of a replacement-window project before you choose an installer. This homeowner guide covers installation methods, preparation, project scope, and the final walkthrough—not a directory of every window service.
Ask whether your project calls for an insert replacement or a full-frame replacement. The condition of the existing frame, opening, and surrounding materials helps determine the appropriate scope.
Insert replacement: A new window unit fits within an existing frame that remains in place. Ask the installer to assess that frame before proposing this approach.
Full-frame replacement: The existing frame is removed as part of the work. Ask how the proposal addresses flashing, surrounding finishes, and any damaged materials uncovered during removal.
The installation method should follow the selected product’s instructions and applicable local requirements. Ask your provider and permitting authority which approvals, inspections, or historic-property restrictions apply to your project.
Your installer should explain the project sequence in writing. The exact method and schedule depend on the selected windows, existing conditions, and agreed scope.
1
Have the provider verify opening dimensions, frame condition, operation, access, and interior and exterior finishes. Confirm the window model, frame material, glass specifications, opening style, and installation method before ordering. Ask who is responsible for measurements and correcting an ordering error.
2
Move furniture, window treatments, and breakable items away from the work area as directed. Discuss floor protection, dust control, pets, children, weather exposure, and access arrangements. During installation, the provider should follow product instructions for positioning, fastening, flashing, insulation, and sealing. Ask how concealed damage or changes to scope will be documented and approved.
3
Before signing off, operate the windows with the installer and review locks, screens, finish work, and cleanup. Request product information, care instructions, written warranty terms, and any applicable inspection records. Document unfinished work and agree on how it will be addressed.
Compare written proposals on the same scope—not just the total price. Ask for quantities, dimensions, product specifications, installation method, removal and disposal, trim or finish work, and responsibility for permits where applicable.
Clarify the payment schedule, estimated start and completion dates, how changes are approved, and the process for reporting installation problems. Product warranties and labor coverage are separate: ask who provides each and how claims are handled.

Keep this checklist with your proposal and product documents.
